What a kundli actually contains
Most free kundli sites give you a picture of the rashi chart and stop. The chart is the beginning of the work, not the end of it.
Lagna (ascendant)
The sign rising in the east at your birth. It sets the first house and therefore every house after it — which is why an accurate birth time matters so much.
Rashi & nakshatra
The Moon's sign is your rashi; the nakshatra it occupies starts your Vimshottari dasha and colours temperament far more finely than a sign can.
Twelve bhavas
Self, wealth, courage, home, children, health, partnership, longevity, fortune, career, gains and loss. Every question maps onto a house before it maps onto a planet.
Divisional charts
D9 navamsa for strength and marriage, D10 for career, D7 for children, D4 for property — sixteen vargas, each magnifying one department of life.

How to read your own chart, in order
Reading a kundli out of order is the most common beginner mistake. This is the sequence a trained astrologer follows.
- Start with the lagna and its lord. The rising sign, its degree, and where its ruler sits. This is the spine of the chart; everything else hangs off it.
- Find the Moon and its nakshatra. Emotional nature, and the starting point of your dasha sequence.
- Read the houses before the planets. Decide which bhava owns your question, then look at its lord, its occupants and what aspects it.
- Confirm in the navamsa. A planet that looks strong in D1 and collapses in D9 rarely delivers. This single check prevents most over-readings.
- Weigh, do not just look. Shadbala and ashtakavarga turn an impression into a number, and often overturn the impression.
- Only then, the timing. Find the running mahadasha and antardasha. A promise in the chart without a supporting period is a promise for later.

Your birth time to the minute
The ascendant advances roughly one degree every four minutes. Ten minutes of error can move a divisional chart entirely and shift a dasha by years.
Correct time zone and DST
Historic time zones and wartime daylight saving are a frequent silent error in free calculators. 96Astro resolves them from the birthplace and date.
Your choice of ayanamsa
Lahiri by default, with alternatives available. Changing ayanamsa can move a planet across a sign boundary, so the chart states which one produced it.

What is a kundli?
A kundli is a map of the sky for the exact moment and place you were born: which sign was rising, where each planet stood, and how the twelve houses divide the chart. Every other Vedic technique is read from it.
Is the kundli on 96Astro really free?
Yes. Casting a chart and viewing the lagna chart, planetary positions, nakshatras, divisional charts and Vimshottari dasha costs nothing. Printable PDF reports and advanced modules are paid; the chart is not.
What if I do not know my exact birth time?
Planetary positions in signs stay broadly correct, but the ascendant moves about a degree every four minutes, so houses, divisional charts and dasha timing become unreliable. Treat house-based readings with caution, and consider birth-time rectification.
Which ayanamsa does 96Astro use?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) by default — the standard for Indian Vedic work — with others selectable.
What is the difference between the D1 and D9 chart?
D1 (rashi) shows life as it appears. D9 (navamsa) divides each sign into nine and shows the underlying strength of a planet, marriage, and the later half of life. A planet strong in D1 but weak in D9 rarely delivers what it seems to promise.
